About The Position

The Principal Counsel, Education Affairs at the University of California Office of the President plays a crucial role in providing legal expertise and guidance on a wide range of education-related matters. Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant practice experience in a law firm, or in-house counsel for an academic institution, corporation or other entity required.
  • Demonstrated ability in collaboration, facilitation, and strategic and creative thinking.
  • Thorough understanding of highly complex legal issues and ability to foresee implications in specialty area.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including proven ability to actively listen, negotiate, persuade and educate.
  • Effective written communication skills and ability to create and deliver effective materials and presentations appropriate to a particular audience.
  • Effective research skills; ability to readily identify critical legislative changes in area of specialty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide substantial expertise in the Education Affairs specialty and independently handle a full range of legal matters and projects.
  • Interpret complex facts and the law in areas of moderate to high ambiguity.
  • Establish effective relationships with key internal and external constituencies.
  • Advise and render opinions to clients regarding the legal implications of establishing or changing policy.
  • Negotiate matters on behalf of The Regents and represent the University in administrative or court litigation.
  • Serve as a trusted strategic partner with University business units, providing practical advice and alternative solutions.
  • Delegate work effectively to maximize efficiency and provide clear expectations and feedback to others.
  • Mentor less experienced colleagues and support diversity efforts in recruitment and career advancement.
  • Develop and modify practices and procedures to conform with changing legal requirements.
