As a Principal Controls Engineer, you will lead complex engineering initiatives that strengthen the reliability, security, and performance of power plant control systems across Associated Electric Cooperative’s generating fleet. You will use deep expertise in power generation, distributed control systems, and operational technology to drive modernization, guide long term planning, and support safe, efficient operation of coal and gas units. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy technical leadership, systemwide impact, and hands on problem solving.

  • Assess, design, and manage full lifecycle modernization projects for plant control systems across all generation facilities.
  • Evaluate system functionality, obsolescence, and maintainability to recommend future upgrades and improvements.
  • Provide advanced engineering support for DCS, PLC, CEMS, and auxiliary systems, ensuring reliable operations and documentation accuracy.
  • Develop and maintain programs, interfaces, and ancillary systems that support plant personnel and fleet productivity.
  • Lead efforts to maintain and strengthen cybersecurity and physical security for operational technology.
  • Collaborate with engineers, plant staff, and external partners to solve complex technical challenges and improve system performance.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in instrumentation and control systems.
  • Detailed knowledge of distributed control systems, including ABB, Emerson, GE, and Siemens.
  • Experience working with control system networks and related systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting, organization, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25 percent to generating facilities.
  • Familiarity with coal and gas fired power plant environments.
  • Senior level project management experience.
  • Experience designing and managing complex modernization projects.
  • Prior leadership or mentoring of engineering staff.
