About The Position

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers Microsoft's cloud services. As a Principal Control System Engineer in the CTO Office of CO+I, you will be responsible for developing new innovative solutions for Microsoft's data centers including operations technology, automation systems, cooling technologies, and infrastructure systems. You'll be responsible for the design and integration of these through control systems that communicate with production software infrastructure. You will work closely with other engineers and customers to design, prototype, test, and deliver high-quality and reliable solutions that meet the performance, efficiency, and scalability requirements of Microsoft's cloud services. Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 100 Datacenters and 1 million servers. Our foundation is built upon and managed by a team of subject matter experts working to support services for more than 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in over 90 countries worldwide. Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years technical engineering experience
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years experience across multiple control systems technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end control system architecture and technical direction for complex automation and infrastructure systems from concept through deployment readiness.
  • Establish design principles, patterns, and standards that enable safe, scalable, and maintainable systems while supporting rapid product development.
  • Lead system decomposition and tradeoff analysis, balancing performance, safety, availability, and long-term supportability.
  • Drive safety-first system design, including leadership of hazard analyses and definition of protective functions.
  • Act as the technical authority for complex & novel control challenges, providing guidance during development, integration, and system validation.
  • Partner closely with operations, facilities, and safety stakeholders to ensure designs are deployable and supportable.
  • Mentor and drive engineering excellence across the team through leading design reviews, coaching, and developing best practices.
  • Influence product and platform roadmaps by articulating technical risks, architectural constraints, and system-level implications to leadership.
