About The Position

Toole Design Group in Portland, ME is looking to hire an experienced and talented full-time Principal Civil Engineer. As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You use programs like AutoCAD in order to fulfill production work on your projects as needed and/or supervise others doing that production work. You will manage projects and guide your team through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and answering questions during construction. You will work with your team to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality. You'll be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, delivering projects to construction. You will play a key role in implementing the firm's quality initiatives and in supporting business development and project pursuits. In an industry that is constantly changing, you'll be at the forefront of delivering creative solutions to challenging projects. We are targeting a salary range of $175,000-$200,000 for this position.

Requirements

  • A Professional Engineering license in ME (other Northeast states a plus)
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering, or relevant field
  • At least 15 years of relevant engineering experience

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years serving in a project manager or design lead role, preferably for MA or other northeast-based clients, with a proven track record of delivering multiple large/complex projects on time and on budget
  • A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling and design of accessible public spaces
  • Proficiency in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads)
  • Experience analyzing and designing stormwater infrastructure, including the use of stormwater design software such as HydroCAD or HydroFlow
  • Experience developing construction documents and providing construction management services
  • Experience in preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
  • General experience leading multidisciplinary teams, coordinating utility and right-of-way impacts, street lighting, traffic signal, and landscape/hardscape layout
  • Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
  • Experience in Civil – Roadway – Highway design and are interested in moving into Complete Streets Design
  • Passionate about sustainability and the opportunity to work on challenging multimodal projects that make communities more livable
  • Strong leadership skills and enjoy mentoring junior staff
