About The Position

The Principal Biologist at the Port of San Diego will serve as the subject matter expert on biological programs related to San Diego Bay, focusing on natural resources, endangered species, and critical habitats. This role involves managing contracts, budgets, and grant funding while overseeing the implementation of biological and environmental initiatives for construction projects. The Principal Biologist will also conduct extensive research and analysis, provide support to management, and ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, biology, natural resources, marine science, or a closely related field.
• Seven years of increasingly responsible environmental project management or program development experience.
• Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations including the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.

Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, administer, implement, and oversee the daily functions of the department's biological programs.
• Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the biological program.
• Schedule, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of contractors, consultants, and staff.
• Conduct and prepare reports per the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.
• Develop, administer, and oversee program budgets and monitor expenditures.
• Manage large-scale Port-wide biological programs or projects and formulate overall program/project goals.
• Lead and participate in local, regional, and statewide task forces and committees.
• Develop and oversee consultant or contractor contracts related to assigned areas of specialty.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of program activities and recommend modifications.
• Conduct field sampling and environmental survey activities associated with various biological programs.
