About The Position

The City of Laramie is seeking a Principal Accountant to join our dedicated finance team. Under limited direction, the Principal Accountant will perform a wide range of responsible, confidential, and professional accounting, budgeting, and finance-related duties. This role will also serve as a liaison between City departments, staff, outside agencies, and the public, while taking a leadership role in managing and improving transaction processing systems. As a Principal Accountant, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the City's financial integrity and transparency, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and supporting the implementation of key financial strategies. Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional accounting experience, with a focus on accounting, financial reporting, or audit services.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting or a closely related field (transcripts required).
  • In-depth knowledge of governmental accounting principles, practices, and terminology, as well as financial reporting frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of the internal control framework and its practical application.
  • Familiarity with business data processing principles, especially as they relate to accounting information systems.
  • Solid understanding of laws regulating public agency accounting and fiscal operations.
  • Familiarity with principles and best practices for municipal budget preparation, planning, and control.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prioritize, and deliver accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting services for the City of Laramie.
  • Independently manage your workload with minimal daily direction while meeting multiple deadlines and ensuring accuracy.
  • Review, reconcile, and analyze the general ledger for appropriate coding.
  • Process transactions, prepare financial reports, analyze financial events, and make necessary journal entries or adjustments to accounting records.
  • Proactively identify potential issues and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Lead and assist with the implementation and management of accounting software within assigned functions.
  • Oversee the technical setup, workflow design, and system module maintenance.
  • Monitor system performance and recommend improvements to optimize efficiency.
  • Work closely with the Finance Manager or designee to prepare essential financial reports, including the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, Recommended Budget, and State Census.
  • Support the preparation of internal financial reports, such as monthly financial statements.
