About The Position

The Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Contemporary Islamic Religion and Society at Harvard Divinity School is a tenured or tenure-track position aimed at scholars focusing on Islam in Africa and its expressions in the African Diaspora, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. The role involves teaching, research, and collaboration with various academic programs and departments, emphasizing the historical and contemporary legacy of African Islam.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated expertise in the historical and contemporary legacy of African expressions of Islam.
  • Ability to teach a broad range of courses in Islamic Studies.
  • Strong research background in relevant areas of specialization.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration with other academic departments.
  • Familiarity with the African Diaspora in Latin America and/or the Caribbean.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in Islamic Studies, including but not limited to Sufism, literary studies, women and gender studies, Islamic intellectual traditions, Qur'an studies, Islamic art and architecture, transnational and transregional movements, politics, and modernity.
  • Engage with students in the Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, and Master of Religion in Public Life programs.
  • Collaborate with PhD candidates in the Study of Religion in the Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • Work closely with other relevant departments such as Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, African and African American Studies, and the Committee on the Study of Religion.
