About The Position

Performs complex analytical work and research for the Accounting Policy & Research group, which coordinates and manages complex financial accounting and analysis relating to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Regulatory Accounting Principles (RAP) issues. Responsible for researching and providing accounting guidance based on accounting authoritative literature and pronouncements. Provides technical accounting and finance expertise on a wide range of accounting and business issues. Acts as lead analyst for team with minimal supervision. Provides expertise and guidance to other analysts and team members. The External Reporting group’s responsibilities include the preparation and filing of the DTE Energy Form 10-K’s, Form 10-Q’s, and Form 11-K’s with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Also handles preparation and submission of annual and quarterly regulatory filings to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or business related field and seven years of experience in auditing, financial accounting and/or financial reporting
  • Comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and SEC reporting requirements to ensure the Company’s compliance in external reports
  • Experience in the application of a broad range of technical accounting and reporting requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to organize work independently and to work in teams. Ability to coordinate cross functional teams and projects
  • Computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office suite
  • Communicates well with others, including proficient verbal, nonverbal, and written skills
  • Ability to concisely analyze, summarize and present information to various management levels (including senior and executive)
  • Ability to respond quickly to changing customer requirements and changes in the business
  • Ability to work overtime during peak reporting periods; flexibility in working hours required
  • Creates and fosters a positive working environment within and across functional areas
  • Willing to perform an emergency or storm assignment as needed

  • Experience with application of ASC 815 related to complex derivative transactions and ASC 810 related to new acquisitions/contracts

Responsibilities

  • Leads cross-functional groups in the implementation of new accounting pronouncements or accounting research related to financial statement presentation and disclosures
  • Works directly with external auditors on resolving emerging accounting issues and reporting matters
  • Facilitates and implements process improvements
  • Provides strategic accounting guidance on all accounting related matters
  • Researches current and emerging complex accounting issues and implements related accounting policies and procedures with minimal supervision
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP and regulatory accounting over complex topics
  • Prepares accounting analysis and whitepapers with minimal supervision
  • Analyzes complex business transactions and determines accounting treatment with minimal supervision
  • Coordinates the preparation of external financial reports in compliance with SEC and other regulatory reporting requirements
  • Prepares and reviews drafts of financial statements, footnotes, and management’s discussion and analysis
