About The Position

Join our team at Zoo Atlanta, where our mission includes enhancing animal welfare through research and data-driven practices. This paid internship offers a unique opportunity to participate in welfare, behavioral, cognitive, population management, and/or conservation research with primates at Zoo Atlanta, as well as working with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Additionally, this position will gain experiential knowledge of animal husbandry and public speaking, guest interaction, and contribution to research-related social media posts.

Requirements

  • The intern must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta's Vision, Mission, and Values statement.
  • The intern must be willing to comply with all safety policies and procedures, including being tested for TB and wearing Personal Protective Equipment where/when required.
  • 40 hours per week, usually including one weekend day.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working/volunteering at an AZA-accredited facility preferred.
  • Position limited to U.S. nationals, unless already in the United States with a working visa.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with ongoing research projects, including data collection and data management.
  • Daily animal behavior observations for longitudinal behavioral monitoring program.
  • Participation in all aspects of welfare research, from project design, data collection, data summary and analysis, to contributing to writing for publication.
  • Assist with maintaining digital archives.
  • Deliver educational talks and demonstrations to zoo visitors and on social media, highlighting ongoing research and welfare initiatives.
  • Assisting with animal husbandry 4 hours a week.
  • Other duties as needed.

Benefits

  • $12.50/hr, 40 hours a week, plus an $800 stipend per quarter.
