The Pricing & Profitability Unit is a specialist function within the Matter Support Team. It works directly with attorneys and firm leadership to provide commercial intelligence and strategic advice for winning, structuring, and profitably managing client engagements. The team collaborates across all US practice groups to shape fee strategy, oversee matter-level economics, and deliver financial insights for confident commercial decisions. As a Manager in this unit, based in New York, the role involves serving as a trusted pricing adviser to partners and practice group leadership across US offices. This professional will bring deep commercial expertise and a proactive advisory approach to the US pricing function, contributing to firm-wide initiatives. The role requires close collaboration with attorneys, business development, and finance leadership to drive pricing excellence, strengthen matter economics, and achieve high-quality strategic outcomes. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required
  • Substantial professional experience in legal pricing, matter management, or a comparable commercial or financial advisory role within professional services
  • Demonstrated ability to advise senior stakeholders on pricing and commercial decisions, with the credibility, independence, and sound judgment to push back constructively when required
  • Excellent collaboration skills with a focus on building strong relationships across attorneys, business services, and firm leadership
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, including financial modelling and scenario analysis
  • Genuine interest in the application of AI and emerging technology to pricing, forecasting, and matter analytics
  • Strong multi-tasking and project management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines, changing priorities, and high stakeholder expectations while maintaining composure
  • Excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce polished, client-facing deliverables under time pressure
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and high expectations
  • Natural curiosity and dedication to continuous learning; commitment to growing as a well-rounded pricing and profitability professional
  • Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Suite, particularly Excel

Nice To Haves

  • A concentration in finance, economics, or accounting is preferred
  • An advanced degree (MBA is a plus)
  • Law firm experience is preferred
  • Candidates from management consulting, Big 4 advisory, or corporate legal operations with relevant transferable experience are encouraged to apply
  • Experience with business intelligence tools such as Power BI or comparable platforms is advantageous
  • Familiarity with legal and financial systems such as 3E, Foundation, or similar platforms is preferred
  • Experience managing or developing junior staff is an asset and may be part of this role's scope as the team grows

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support pricing strategy for US practice groups, advising partners on fee structures for pitches, RFPs, and new matter openings, ensuring responses are competitive, commercially sound, and aligned with firm strategy.
  • Develop tailored fee arrangements across the full spectrum of structures, hourly, fixed fee, blended rate, success fee, and hybrid models, matched to client objectives and firm profitability requirements.
  • Build and maintain matter-level pricing models, internal rate benchmarks, and comparable engagement data that support timely, defensible pricing decisions.
  • Contribute to the annual rate-setting process by providing analysis of market positioning, internal realization trends, and client-specific rate intelligence.
  • Produce client-facing pricing narratives and financial summaries that articulate the firm's value proposition clearly in terms relevant to each client's business objectives.
  • Monitor active matter performance against agreed budgets and pricing assumptions, proactively identifying variances, escalating risks, and advising partners on corrective action.
  • Assess staffing models, discount structures, and scope assumptions for profitability risk at the outset of engagements and throughout their lifecycle.
  • Oversee the write-off approval process, ensuring each decision is assessed on its commercial merits, properly documented, and fed back into future pricing intelligence.
  • Deliver forward-looking input to the monthly revenue forecast by translating matter-level intelligence into billing readiness and revenue timing projections.
  • Leverage technology, data analytics, and AI-enabled tools to enhance the quality, speed, and scalability of the team's pricing and profitability work across the US region.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across practice groups and business services functions to identify opportunities and ensure consistency of approach across the firm.
  • Lead post-matter reviews on significant engagements, connecting original pricing assumptions to actual outcomes to strengthen future pitch accuracy and build institutional knowledge.
  • Track market and competitor pricing developments, translating findings into practical guidance for attorneys and practice leadership.
  • Educate, advise, and coach attorneys on pricing strategy, negotiation positioning, and the commercial implications of fee structure decisions.
