About The Position

The Prevention Specialist is responsible for the development and ongoing support for community outreach efforts related to implementing the Youth Unite Program, to address alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use and community-level safety in San Diego s high school and middle school youth community. This position provides technical assistance and support to the community to promote and implement an environmental systems approach to ATOD and harm reduction. The Prevention Specialist position may be eligible for remote work not to exceed maximum 2 days per week .

Requirements

  • Bachelor s degree in Public Administration, Psychology, Public Health, Education, Social Work, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant leadership experience in providing prevention services in a community setting.
  • At least one (1) year of prevention services experience to include one (1) or more ATOD-related and/or public health prevention campaigns.
  • Possess general knowledge of multi-system collaboration to affect organizational and systems changes to reduce the harm and negative impact of ATOD and or related public health conditions or problems.
  • Knowledge of the principles and application of environmental strategies that advance policy-based prevention approaches to reduce ATOD related problems.
  • Experience with alcohol, tobacco, and drug issues, environmental prevention, and community development.
  • Experience facilitating youth programming and implementing classroom management strategies.
  • Knowledge of Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), trauma-informed practices, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), restorative justice, or similar concepts
  • Knowledge of collective impact model and related frameworks to address drug use at the community level.
  • Knowledge of the factors that increase the risk of substance abuse and the factors that minimize the risk of substance use.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to include public speaking and presentation.
  • Experience working effectively with community health development, and empowerment agencies; diverse cultures and populations, and collaborative environments.
  • Have access to reliable transportation and willing to use it for job related tasks, including transporting community members and youth.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, provide, and evaluate capacity building interventions for youth, young adults, and community members to support their efforts to address ATOD and/or crime prevention solutions.
  • Engage youth through on-campus Youth Unite programming centered on connecting them with natural and cultural resources in or adjacent to their communities through field trips.
  • Promote cross-sector collaboration through partnership development to reduce youth and adult substance use.
  • Guide youth-led planning efforts to reduce ATOD and or public health concerns to implement focused strategies with specific policy goals and objectives.
  • Engage agencies, partner organizations, partner schools, local government, school boards, civil society groups, and other collaborative partners to recruit as stakeholders and allies.
  • Research, identify, and implement Evidence-Based Programs that address ATOD critical issues and or barriers to equitable access of natural and cultural resources such as the Youth-Led Participatory Research framework.
  • Create and present educational ATOD prevention and or crime prevention materials for youth, young adults, community members, and partner agencies.
  • Plan and organize educational opportunities to implement a collective impact model approach to prevention.
  • Develop and sustain community-based collaborations to include, grassroots community partners, credible messengers, and community stakeholders to achieve program goals, outcomes and to expand programing to reach broader community.
  • Partner with media to develop and implement media advocacy strategies.
  • Organize and facilitate quarterly field trips to culturally relevant and or local natural sites across San Diego.
