The Wyoming Department of Health is seeking a Prevention Specialist who will be responsible for coordinating tobacco and substance use prevention activities within the Public Health Division. This program is responsible for statewide prevention efforts. The Prevention Specialist assists the Program Manager by coordinating the management, implementation, and monitoring of grants and contracts, as well as assisting the Department and outside stakeholders in developing, implementing, and evaluating prevention efforts across Wyoming. These efforts further the Department's goal of reducing morbidity and mortality associated with tobacco and substance use.

  • Collaborate with other WDH programs and state agencies to prevent initiation of substances.
  • Stay current on the science and evidence-based practices for tobacco prevention and cessation services, trends in tobacco use, and other nicotine delivery products.
  • Stay current on the science and evidence-based practices for substance use prevention, including opioid prevention.
  • Serve as a region lead for counties implementing evidence-based prevention strategies through the Community Prevention Grant.
  • Collect and report any agreed-upon performance management data, grant reporting information, or other requested information from each county.
  • Provide technical assistance as needed.
  • Work with program evaluators and division epidemiologists to ensure adequate and appropriate data are collected to meet the needs of program planning.
  • Participate in strategic planning, community prevention implementation, community budgetary oversight, and policy development.
  • Write and manage tobacco prevention program contracts, including a request for proposal when required.
  • Assist the TPCP Manager in program planning activities, as well as other projects as assigned, to help achieve program goals.
  • Deliver professional presentations to stakeholders.
  • Support WDH's response to public health emergencies, as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, education, psychology/social science, or services, public health, public administration, or related field.
  • 1-3 years of progressive work experience managing a health services program.
  • Master's level degree or higher may be substituted for experience.
  • Knowledge of public health prevention and healthcare services for tobacco prevention and cessation.
  • Knowledge of state contracting, budgeting, procurement, payments, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Knowledge of community coalition building and the development of diverse partnerships and stakeholder groups.
  • Knowledge of public health core competencies.
  • Skills in technical writing as applied to various media, including the preparation of grant applications, reports, promotional, educational, and informational materials to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to work on youth programs.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to work in a team with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at various stages of progress.
  • Ability to work independently under tight schedules.
  • Skills in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply data.
  • Ability to travel, including out-of-state and overnight travel.
  • Knowledge and skills with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and web-based scheduling tools.
