About The Position

The Prevention Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing preventative maintenance and inspections on buildings, equipment and systems owned or operated by Brazos County. This role helps ensure that facilities remain operational, safe, efficient and well-maintained, minimizing equipment failure, extending lifespan of building systems and supporting the mission of the Facilities Services Department. The Technician will work across multiple county facilities, coordinate with other trades and maintenance staff, maintain records, and respond to maintenance issues and emergencies as required.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or its equivalent, plus at least three years of experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret schematic drawings, and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of glues, paints, chemicals, etc., and knows the hazards of these and other substances used.
  • Texas Drivers License
  • Safely operate equipment, use hand tools and other specialized equipment, understand and follow instructions, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and work effectively and cooperatively with coworkers.

  • Mill and lathe experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct preventive maintenance routines on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, building systems, and generators (diesel and natural gas) (e.g., filters, belts, lubrication, inspect bearings, motors, pumps, control systems).
  • Perform scheduled inspections of facilities and equipment, identify potential problems (wear, leaks, inefficiencies) and report findings to supervisor.
  • Carry out minor repairs and adjustments during preventive maintenance work to avert system breakdowns (e.g., replacing filters, repairing valves, tightening belts, cleaning coils).
  • Log all maintenance activities, inspections, findings, and corrective actions in the work order/maintenance management system.
  • Air and hydraulic fluid power systems: stationary and mobile equipment (linear and rotary)
  • Electronics and motor control diagnostics
  • Assist in the prioritization and scheduling of maintenance tasks in coordination with the Facilities Services Department staff.
  • Maintain inventory of parts, supplies and materials associated with preventive maintenance; order or requisition supplies as needed.
  • Work with contractors, other trades (electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs) and internal stakeholders to coordinate preventive maintenance work during off-hours or non-disruptive times.
  • Ensure compliance with safety practices, building codes, manufacturer’s instructions, regulatory standards and county policies (including OSHA, chemical handling, confined space if applicable).
  • Assist in emergency maintenance or breakdown repair when preventive maintenance identifies urgent issues or when equipment fails unexpectedly.
  • Suggest process improvements, cost-saving opportunities, and best practice preventive maintenance methods.
