IRVING ISD PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE LEAD JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Preventative Maintenance Lead Exemption Status: Nonexempt Reports To: HVAC Lead Funding Source: General Fund Dept/School: Facilities Pay Grade: Facilities – 4 261 Days Date Revised: October 2025 Primary Purpose: Supervise preventative maintenance staff and perform mechanically-related activities required to maintain the District’s heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Routinely clean and lubricate HVAC equipment, replace filters, and ensure equipment operates efficiently.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Valid Texas Class-C driver’s license and proof of insurability with District insurance carrier
  • Knowledge and skills in HVAC preventative maintenance, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical trades
  • Ability to coach or train staff in HVAC system components
  • Ability to understand, follow, and issue verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Effective organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to utilize technology resources relevant to the position
  • Minimum four years mechanically related field or craft experience, preferably in educational environment

Responsibilities

  • Review assignments from supervisor(s); discuss and determine the best course of action to accomplish work in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Assign and perform preventative maintenance activities, including but not limited to: inspecting, cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and replacing belts, filters, pulleys, and drain pans, as well as working to ensure maximum operating capacities of exhaust fans and drinking fountains.
  • Provide job-related instructions and ongoing training to technicians and helpers to advance their knowledge and skills.
  • Inspect and confirm that assignments are completed before leaving job sites.
  • Observe and coordinate most preventative maintenance work in conjunction with seasonal changes to provide the most effective system improvements and enhancements.
  • Order or schedule materials, supplies, and equipment (scaffolding, lifts, etc.) used in preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate written records of work performed on HVAC systems to track advanced notices of system falters, failures, and frequency of downtimes to adequately project replacement cycles.
  • Document time utilization and materials/parts on work order completion reports.
  • Respond in a timely manner when contacted regarding urgent situations or emergencies (during or outside of normal business hours)
  • Exhibit behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible; and serve as role model for staff and public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Guide staff through daily assignments with awareness of potential dangers and harm that could occur.
  • Practice a high standard of safety and site cleanup in the performance of all duties.
  • Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
