About The Position

The Prescribed Burn Crew Member will assist in the preparation and execution of prescribed burns on the Bayfields property in Bladen County, NC. This part-time, call-when-needed position is essential for managing the ecological health of the property and may also involve additional forest management tasks. The role is dependent on favorable weather conditions and will run for approximately 12 weeks from January 2nd to March 31st, 2025, with potential for occasional work in early spring.

Requirements

• Ability to perform strenuous work.
• Must be 18 years of age or older with a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to read a map.

Nice To Haves

• Completion of at least one training burn under the supervision of a qualified burn boss.
• Certification in wildland firefighting or other prescribed fire training (e.g., S-190, S-130).
• Experience operating equipment such as two-way radios, chainsaws, backpack blowers, brush cutters, UTVs, portable pumps, and drip torches.
• Familiarity with the plants and plant communities of the North Carolina coastal plain.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the preparation and implementation of prescribed burns.
• Assist with additional forest management tasks such as timber inventory data collection, vegetation trimming, timber stand improvement, and boundary line maintenance.
