The OOSC exclusively works with Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons, P.C. (DMOS) surgeons. DMOS is the longest thriving private orthopaedic practice in the central Iowa area. The Preoperative Planning Nurse works with patient providers to assess and coordinate data submitted by the practitioner’s offices in preparation for patient surgical procedures . Primarily over the phone and e-mail, they collaborate with physicians and other health care workers to assure completion of the patient plan for surgery. They must facilitate and demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all times. The work of this role delivers a holistic approach to the delivery of services, improved patient care, and a high level of satisfaction from patients, families and practitioner’s.

Requirements

  • Must have a current nursing license to practice through the Iowa Department of Public Health
  • Maintain a basic ACLS Certification
  • Unrestricted IA RN license, BLS.
  • Must be able to set priorities and work with minimal supervision.
  • May require some flexibility of hourly schedule per patient need.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle stress calmly and be flexible to change.
  • Willingness to be flexible and remain focused during fast paced schedules.
  • Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment will be required to complete a full physical, drug screen, criminal background check, federal background checks, education verification, reference checks, and an initial TB test.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS and PALS preferred.
  • Experience in a similar related industry or ASC is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in Orthopedics is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Organization in delivering outstanding patient care.
  • Supports, and performs according to, approved policies and procedures.
  • Participates as a team member in support of the total perioperative process.
  • Considers patient rights in performance of job duties and responsibilities.
  • Develops a good working relationship with the practitioner’s offices; coordinating the process of obtaining missing information such as; history & physicals, orders, etc. Interactions are respectful and courteous.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally using a translator when necessary.
  • Documents information received from the patient are disseminated to the appropriate people or departments.
  • Attends and actively participates in meetings, committees and in-services according to job responsibilities and Facility requirements.
  • Assists with orientation and training of new personnel and acts as a resource person for patient care problems.
  • Identifies high risk patients and alerts the anesthesiologist or potential risks identified during the investigation of special health needs.
  • Provides and coordinates nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgment, consults with Control Supervisor when appropriate
  • Assist in completion of pre-admission assessment/calls, as time allows.
  • Interacts appropriately with various age groups.
  • Accurately assesses and interprets age-specific patient data.
  • Accurately interprets age-specific patient responses to questions and instructions.
  • Considers age-specific patient requirements when responding to emergency situations.
  • Alerts the clinical manager, practitioner, and scheduler if any discrepancy is found during the pre-admission assessment .
  • Assists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient upon admission according to Facility policy.
  • Develops a plan for patient care based on assessment data; implements and documents preoperative care according to protocol.
  • Informs patient about routine care and procedures related to the perioperative experience.
  • Provides comfort and reassurance to the patient and supports the patient’s right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Reviews documentation received from the practitioner’s office for potential discrepancies, addresses those discrepancies prior to the patient’s scheduled day of surgery.
  • Adheres to organizational policy with particular attention to standards of conduct and to confidentiality as it relates to HIPAA.
