About The Position

The PreOp RN IV is an expert-level practitioner who provides advanced clinical leadership and support within the PreOperative setting. This nurse serves as a unit resource and consults across departments to enhance patient readiness and safety. The RN IV leads in process improvement, staff education, and evidence-based practice to elevate nursing care and optimize patient outcomes in surgical preparation. This role functions as a clinical leader at UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty & Research Hospital.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required
  • Current Texas Board of Nursing (or Compact State) RN license; Or a Temporary Texas RN License (Permanent TX license within 90 days upon hire).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, within 7 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a clinical resource for PreOp nurses, providing expert guidance on surgical prep, assessments, and workflow best practices.
  • Assesses and anticipates patient and family education needs related to the surgical journey; develops educational materials.
  • Facilitates interprofessional collaboration with surgeons, anesthesia, OR staff, and recovery teams.
  • Leads competency and continuing education initiatives tailored to PreOp clinical needs.
  • Supports preceptorship programs and orients new PreOp staff; evaluates learning outcomes.
  • Leads safety audits and pre-surgical checklist compliance reviews.
  • Assists with the design and implementation of improvement projects focused on case readiness, throughput, and patient experience.
  • Participates in and drives evidence-based practice, serving as a lead for protocol updates or clinical trials in the PreOp area.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager in performance reviews and goal setting for team development.
  • Promotes positive staff engagement, retention, and contributes to recruitment initiatives.
  • Contributes to hospital-wide education and research efforts, representing the PreOp perspective.
  • Provides leadership coverage during times of increased volume or complexity.
  • Uses EMR expertise to identify documentation improvement opportunities and train staff.
  • Supports budgetary or space planning through input on resource needs and trends.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned to support high-reliability surgical care.
