About The Position

The Preconstruction Engineer supports and executes core preconstruction responsibilities within the design-build process and other bidding processes. This role contributes to estimating, scope development, bid coordination, design review, meeting execution, and project transition from preconstruction to operations. The Preconstruction Engineer develops increasing capability in executing these responsibilities, from supporting and learning the process to independently managing assigned tasks with limited oversight. Success in this role requires attention to detail, disciplined follow-through, and the ability to work effectively within established systems and team structures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience in estimating, preconstruction, or commercial construction preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Procore preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in preparation of professional presentations to prospective clients and support the client presentation process.
  • Learn and apply components of the design-build process in alignment with the project matrix.
  • Assist in developing coordinated scope documents, conceptual budget models, and preliminary design-build schedules from conceptual drawings.
  • Prepare and update conceptual budget model estimates utilizing historical cost data and previous project information.
  • Develop and revise budget model estimates as design evolves.
  • Contribute to preparation of final estimates used to establish GMP or contract sum.
  • Track design alignment with the budget model and scope document; identify and communicate discrepancies for resolution.
  • Evaluate cost and value impacts of design decisions to support value design efforts.
  • Review project schedules with the field team to understand estimating impacts and assumptions.
  • Assist in maintaining preconstruction schedules and tracking related activities.
  • Assist with Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) approvals and related correspondence.
  • Organize owner communications and document scope discussions or requested changes.
  • Attend design and owner meetings and support maintaining alignment with scope and budget.
  • Review drawings and specifications, involving the relevant team members as appropriate, and identify clarifications or concerns.
  • Prepare for and facilitate project meetings, distributing agendas and meeting minutes.
  • Utilize key project meetings to support progression of the design-build process.
  • Execute established SOP meetings, including: Project Award Project Chase Project Bid Review Internal Project Kickoff External Project Kickoff
  • Compile and communicate relevant project information to appropriate team members to support transition to bidding or construction.
  • Communicate with potential bidders verbally, digitally and in person on bid intent, bid clarifications and scope content
  • Coordinate the bidding process, including bidder outreach, document distribution, and timeline tracking.
  • Prepare organized bidding documents utilizing defined bid forms for scope definition and unit pricing.
  • Review and level bids, conduct bidder interviews, and incorporate comments into exhibits.
  • Develop final estimates used to establish GMP or contract sum.
  • Prepare detailed, accurate proposals appropriate to the phase of design.
  • Utilize Procore, Z Drive, and internal systems to support accurate documentation, organization, and bid management practices.
  • Collaborate effectively with Team Leads, Project Managers, and Project Engineers across internal teams, adapting communication and workflow to the specific needs of each team and project.
