The Registered Nurse Preceptor functions as a teacher and mentor, guiding, directing, and supervising the technical nursing activities of a nurse preceptee. This role involves providing guidance and consultation on effective patient care and scope of practice, as well as creating formal and informal learning opportunities for peers regarding practice issues, technology, and current research. The Preceptor identifies and intervenes when staff weaknesses are present. They are responsible for overseeing the preceptee in delivering safe patient care using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). The Registered Nurse is directly responsible for the care of assigned patients, communicating with physicians, nurse directors, and coworkers about changes in patient clinical condition, including hemodynamic monitoring, diagnostic study results, and abnormal symptoms. The Preceptor must respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition and treatment response, maintain patient privacy and confidentiality, and collaborate with patients, families, and hospital staff to achieve goals and outcomes.
