The Unit Assistant functions as a supporting member of the Surgical Hospital team by performing various tasks which include limited patient care, environmental maintenance, assistance with material management, and a variety of other duties. The Unit Assistant reports directly to the Nurse Manager.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • BLS certification required upon hire.
  • Basic computer skills or willingness to learn.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience in an ambulatory surgery center, acute-care facility, or long-term care setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Transports patients of all ages to and from various areas within the facility ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Assists with limited patient care in the pre-op and recovery unit as needed, specified, and directed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. (Maintains an awareness and is respectful of the developmental stages/ages of patients served.)
  • Assists with bay clean-up, preparation and room turnover.
  • Utilizes transport, positioning, procedural, and safety equipment properly.
  • Assists with routine care, maintenance, and troubleshooting of designated equipment and devices.
  • Assists with maintaining the cleanliness of the peri-operative environment during daily activity.
  • Provides assistance with daily inventory control for both medical and office supplies.
  • Assists with other general facility duties as required and as directed by the Registered Nurse, Manager or Director
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of and compliance with safety policies and procedures, recognizes safety hazards, and initiates appropriate corrective and/or preventive measures.
  • Displays a team approach when working with fellow staff members to ensure optimal patient care and to promote a positive working environment.
  • Communicates patient information to both office and clinical staff as indicated (i.e. medical supply deliveries, physician’s arrival, etc.).
  • Provides assistance with continuous patient flow by providing pre-operative area with clean, made up stretchers and/or moveable recliners, as necessary.
  • Assists with removal of dirty linens and placing trash in appropriate receptacles.
  • Runs errands to various locations as instructed by Supervisors.
  • Maintains patient/facility confidentiality at all times.
  • Conducts job tasks with efficiency and professionalism.
  • Other duties as assigned.
