About The Position

This position is part of a comprehensive career services program for Pre-Health students and alumni. The Pre-Health Career Coach provides career and academic advising, in conjunction with the Academic Advising office, to both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students. This includes support related to experiential education coaching, academic requirements and prerequisites for health programs, and preparation for pre-health graduate programs through individual coaching, classroom visits, and outreach. The role also includes employer relations and outreach to organizations in the healthcare field. Pre-Health coaching facilitates the university’s academic mission by providing essential services in the health professions and maintaining relationships with campus academic and career advisors and faculty who serve the Pre-Health student population.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Experience of advising, teaching, and/or coaching students is required
  • Experience in events and program planning is required

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in career counseling, counseling, higher education, or related degree preferred
  • Experience in career services, academic advising, or similar function
  • Experience advising or coaching Pre-Health students is preferred
  • Experience working in the healthcare industry is preferred
  • Experience with career development theory is preferred
  • Experience working with one or more of the following populations: student veteran or military affiliated students, students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students, minority students are preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small group career advising and coaching for students and alumni who express interest in pursuing health careers which include but are not limited to pre-nursing, pre-med, pre-physician assistant, pre-dental, pre-physical therapy, pre-occupational therapy, pre-pharmacy, pre-veterinary students.
  • Advise current and prospective non-degree students interested in health professions.
  • Work with students to understand academic requirements/pre-requisites for health programs at UCCS and for graduate degrees.
  • Help students prepare for the application process, including practice interviews, and stay current with admission criteria, policies and procedures for graduate and professional school in health-related fields.
  • Oversee and present a set of workshops on how best to prepare and submit applications to health professional fields. These may include topics such as an introduction to specific health fields, how to find clinical positions and internships,application preparation, interview strategies, MCAT preparation, etc.
  • Plan, facilitate, and evaluate topically relevant programming and workshops (e.g., guest speakers, alumni panels, career-focused symposia) in collaboration with the Career Center, Academic Advising, Health Science Student Club, Student Nurses Association, and faculty in health-related fields.
  • Distribute messaging/marketing about Pre-Health advising and programming opportunities.
  • Establish relationships with and engage alumni and friends of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs who work in the health professions; collaborate with Alumni Relations and Career Center on these efforts.
  • Promote opportunities to engage with recruiters from health-related professions and professional schools.
  • Collaborate across campus on cultivating opportunities for students to explore avenues for internships and volunteer experience in health-related fields.
  • Establish relationships with and engage faculty and other campus community stakeholders in development of programming, resources, and advising support for Pre-Health students.
  • Maintains relationships with campus advisors and faculty who serve the Pre-Health student population.
  • Refer students to appropriate student support services, such as career advising, financial aid, disability services, tutoring, psychological counseling, the Office of Admissions, etc.
  • Contribute to career center website and social media presence.
  • Collaborate with career department on joint initiatives and provide support as needed
  • Perform similar or related duties as assigned or required
