About The Position

The Rodney L. White Center for Financial Research at the Wharton School is seeking a pre-doctoral research specialist to support quantitative research in financial economics. The research specialist will work closely with Finance Professors Dan Garrett and Marius Guenzel. Candidates should have a strong interest in finance and economics research. The selected fellow will support research in the fields of corporate finance, behavioral finance, and public finance. The pre-doctoral research specialist will closely collaborate with Professors Garrett and Guenzel, and their coauthors on a number of research projects on behavioral, corporate, and public finance. Tasks will include data collection and cleaning, data analysis and visualization, machine learning, conducting background research and literature reviews, writing, and proofreading. Datasets will primarily involve firm-level outcomes, such as Compustat, NETS, Orbis, Execucomp, and BoardEx, as well as financial market outcomes, such as securities transactions through TRACE, Mergent, Bloomberg, and MSRB. A successful pre-doctoral research specialist will work in this position for 1-2 years, possess a strong desire to expand and deepen skills in research and quantitative data analysis, and emerge prepared to apply for PhD programs in Economics or Finance. Research Specialists will be encouraged to be an active part of the Wharton research community, which can include attending seminars, exploring personal research interests, and taking graduate-level classes at Wharton. The Research Specialist will join a cohort of pre-doctoral Research Specialists both in the Finance Department and across other departments at the Wharton School. The candidate will also be expected to assist as needed in select Rodney White Center programs and activities. The start date for this position is July 1, 2025. Annual salary is in the range of $56,000-58,000 plus benefits. This is a full-time, limited-term position typically intended for recent graduates who are seeking predoctoral research experience. The position is designed for a duration of 1-2 years and cannot be extended beyond the initial term. The estimated last day of employment is on or about June 30, 2027.
