About The Position

This Pre-Award Research Support Manager will provide direction, administrative support, and resources for the pre-award research administration function for College of Engineering faculty, staff, and students. This position is not eligible for University sponsorship for employment authorization. Hybrid within Iowa: This position may be eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work within Iowa after the training period is completed. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience with research grant proposal development, including experience developing and expediting proposal budgets for multiple projects at any given time.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and high attention to detail in work products.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality customer service in a deadline driven environment.
  • Extensive proficiency in Microsoft Office computer programs, particularly Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Working experience with the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and other federal sponsors.
  • Experience working with the University of Iowa systems and electronic submission systems such as Cayuse, eRA Commons, and Research.gov.
  • Working knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience proofreading grant materials and/or providing feedback on non-scientific content.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for pre-award management with a high degree of complexity, from both federal and non-federal funding sources.
  • Assist faculty, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and staff with navigating the university's research infrastructure by providing checklists, liaising with the Division of Sponsored Programs (DSP) and other offices, advising of internal deadlines, developing grant submission timelines, etc.
  • Assist Principal Investigators (PIs) with preparation of research proposals for external funding by creating budgets, interpreting sponsor guidelines, developing supporting materials, and proofreading as needed.
  • Collaborate with post-award support staff and PIs to ensure proper notifications, interpretation of sponsor guidelines, and managing of budgets.
  • Collaborate with post-award support staff to ensure accuracy and timeliness of grant financial projections.
  • Assist faculty with development of compliance information as required for contracts and grant proposals.
  • Consult with faculty to discuss, evaluate, and plan for current and future needs and research funding opportunities.
  • Establish new user accounts and train faculty and research staff on electronic grant submission systems and financial reports.
  • Serve as a contact for the Division of Sponsored Programs regarding grant submissions, along with the CoE Business Officer and Assistant Director of Budget and Finance.
  • Communicate with University of Iowa units to assure compliance, adherence to policies and status tracking, and direct communications with sponsors and other entities.
  • May provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure funding outcomes are achieved.
