About The Position

Rivers Health is seeking a per-diem Pre-admission RN for the General Surgery department. Responsible for the gathering of patient medical information for pre-operative patients prior to the day of surgical procedure. Must work collaboratively with Anesthesia Department, Surgeons, Same Day Surgery Staff, Ancillary Patient Care Areas and Registration to ensure the patients are appropriately prepared for their specific surgical procedure.

Requirements

  • Active WV RN or LPN License.
  • A minimum of five (5) years nursing experience required.

  • Surgical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers and reviews completed diagnostic studies, History and Physical and Consultation reports (if available), as well as surgical/procedure consents (if available).
  • Reports inconsistencies and/or abnormalities to the Anesthesia Department and/or surgeon.
  • Gathers all pertinent information, including but not limited to: past medical/surgical history; patient's height/weight; baseline vital signs (if applicable); dental/airway assessment; prosthetic devises; allergies; current medications; previous anesthesia history; personal of family history of anesthesia complications and social habits.
  • Consults with anesthesia and or the surgeon for any additional diagnostic studies that may be ordered but not collected, or warranted. Follows preadmission protocols to ensure all labs and/or diagnostic studies are ordered and completed.
  • Provides patient and/or significant other with comprehensive instructions regarding NPO status and time to arrive for surgery (if not already arranged by surgeon's office); care of valuables and medication (if applicable).
  • Initiates discharge planning process, including but not limited to, availability of someone to transport the patient home following the procedure: availability of appropriate support first twenty-four (24) hours post-discharge.
  • Provides the patient and/or significant others with a tour of the appropriate units (if patient desires and time avails).
  • As time avails, assists in the care of the Same Day Surgery patients (pre-op and post-op). However, first priority must be given to preadmission testing patients.
  • Ensures that admissions data is sent to registration area in an efficient manner.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned.
  • Complies with Corporate Policies, Departmental Policies and Procedures and Personnel Employee Handbook.

  • Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities including serving on quality improvement teams.
  • Must be able to cross-train to other units as designated.
