Purpose: The Pr Eng RD Industrial Design, a technical industrial design (ID) professional who applies advanced ID, product design and development, engineering principles, human-machine interface, customer and application understanding, and associated skills to ID assignments, including new product design for advanced medical devices. Serves as SME for ID and works in close collaboration with R&D and cross-functional stakeholders and project team members with little or no supervision, as applicable for a principal engineer level. Adheres to environmental policy, procedures, and supports department environmental objectives.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, engineering, science, or related discipline is desired.
  • A post-graduate education/degree/training is desired and may contribute towards the desired years of experience.
  • Technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with a desired 8+ years of significant design, engineering, and/or operational experience

Responsibilities

  • TECHNICAL/DESIGN Responsible for leading industrial design (ID) for assigned ID programs, which may include new product introduction (NPI), lifecycle management (LCM), hardware, software, GUI, consumables, and other programs.
  • Leads and helps foster implementation of best practices in ID for the group, which may include customer-centricity, focus groups, rapid prototyping, outside experts, and other tools and techniques.
  • Serves as an SME for ID, which may include technical aspects such as human factors, functionality, GUI, brand identity, manufacturability, reliability, workflow, application expertise, among others Benchmarks internally and externally.
  • Analyzes design forces (customers, suppliers, competitors, technologies, government regulations) in major markets to identify trends and recommend responses as it relates to design, e.g., recommend an equipment-wide program to improve design continuity and brand identity.
  • Independently executes, and/or directs others in the execution of the design of products by applying traditional and novel engineering theories, concepts, and techniques within the associated disciplines.
  • Designs and leads design-related mock-ups, proof-of-concepts, and other experiments, often with multiple variables, gathers data, and performs detailed analysis to assess relevance and achieve optional solutions.
  • Communicates within R&D and across functions and disciplines, in partnership with program PMO and technical lead.
  • PROBLEM SOLVING/INNOVATION Conceptualizes complete design solutions.
  • Creates or coordinates the design solutions for novel or complex problems; broadly integrates full domain of requirements including regulatory and operational needs; assesses cost benefit, e.g., identifies processes and develops documentation for a complex engineering, construction or manufacturing operation.
  • Explores multiple alternatives.
  • Structures studies and integrates cross-disciplinary and cross-functional aspects to arrive at optimal course of action, e.g., investigates design options to meet customer needs while maintaining quality/regulatory/manufacturing/business requirements.
  • Applies technology in innovative ways. For example, may combine technologies, or find new technologies, to anticipate or address customer needs; shares solutions across programs; employs proven solutions to increase effectiveness of engineering methodology or manufacturing process, e.g., incorporates process commonalities to reduce cycle time; attempts to leverage core technical competencies for best outcomes.
  • ORGANIZATIONAL INTERFACE As ID SME, may mentor others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance.
  • Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on industrial design related programs, as assigned.
  • Interacts with both senior management and external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.
  • Creates clear written and oral communication. Conveys information effectively through formal and informal documents, e.g., develops proposals, project summaries, and design documentation; submits articles for internal or external publication.
  • May move forward with action plans without seeking approval. Exhibits advanced ability to apply concepts of careful communication.
  • Establishes networks conducive to strong ID. Follows through on project goals; contributes willingly and incorporates the ideas of others; shares resources, knowledge and accountability to benefit the objectives of the business, e.g., participates in team meetings; serves either as functional subject matter expert or independent technical expert in design reviews.
  • Builds relationships. Initiates and cultivates open, honest relationships with colleagues, customers, contractors, and vendors by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of others' needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments, e.g., helps; interacts effectively with stakeholders at appropriate levels of the organization.
  • Acts as a trusted advisor. Balances bottom line objectives of a project with long-term interest of customer, e.g., makes trade-offs to further the relationship; incorporates long- term customer benefits into project.
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT Responsible for establishing and meeting industrial design related deliverables, goals, and objectives for each assigned project
  • Understands the business needs of the company and has a thorough knowledge of the customer and clinical needs when developing design and scope. Incorporates business foresight of emerging technological and design trends.
  • Works with engineering, marketing, product development, manufacturing, and other applicable stakeholders to establish scope, priorities, and schedules for industrial design
  • May independently perform economic analysis and feasibility studies related to industrial design related deliverables
  • Responsible, along with other core team members on a given project, for achieving the project's financial targets in support of business objectives.
  • COMPLIANCE Complies with all regulations and standards for quality, Environmental, Health, Safety and Energy (EHS&E) Global Policies, JJV Engineering Standards, and other governance areas as applicable.
  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major projects within function through sound design, early risk assessments, and implementation of fallback strategies.
  • ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE: Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the discipline.
  • May participate in internal, cross-divisional teams to develop and align procedures and standards.
  • Coordinates with technical support personnel to conduct prototype or experimental runs of products or processes related to industrial design.
  • Directs the efforts of others such as technicians and outside resources as needed to achieve industrial design related objectives.
  • Resolves problems, such as design trade-off decisions, technical implementation issues, and crisis situations requiring fast, astute decisions with rapid implementation by utilizing technical training and experience.
  • May provide training or help develop supporting materials on industrial design aspects of a project
  • May serve as an R&D representative on corporate and division task forces, as assigned
