About The Position

Under general supervision, the Power Plant Technician (PPT) / Mechanic at the Brunot Island Generating Station operates the physical plant equipment and controls electricity generation through the use of the DCS, Gage Board, switches, or other controls within the generic term “Control Room.” The PPT maintains constant communication with plant personnel and Load Dispatchers and performs a situational leadership role to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the facility. The PPT directs the equipment clearance program (Lockout/Tagout) and oversees safety activities as required. This position is multidisciplinary and cross-functional, capable of performing chemistry, maintenance, electrical, or other work within the PPT’s qualifications.

Requirements

  • Satisfactorily pass a written test as agreed upon between the Company and Union.
  • Must have two years of experience in an industrial mechanical field or equivalent training/education.
  • Must possess and demonstrate good written and oral communication skills as well as the ability to work well with others.
  • Must maintain all regulatory required licenses as applicable at Company’s expense.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a valid Pittsburgh HVAC Trade License would be beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all assignments safely, participate in creating a safe work environment within the workplace by engaging in safety training, and support continuous improvement.
  • Ensure environmental compliance within the context of operating the facility.
  • Direct plant personnel in the operation and control of the facility and the work of others assigned to assist.
  • Maintain proper boiler chemistry by monitoring and operating the boiler within accepted procedures.
  • Operate plant equipment needed to perform job duties including vehicles, cranes, hoists, etc. Read and interpret blueprints, wiring and schematic diagrams, and perform switching and tagging, mechanical, and electrical tasks.
  • Direct and/or perform duties associated with testing, troubleshooting, monitoring, and operating all power plant equipment, including switching and breaker change-out.
  • Understand and perform water and chemistry treatments, conduct basic water testing, set up and collect water samples, oil samples, and associated data as required.
  • Provide training to other employees.
  • Directly manage assigned projects as required.
  • Perform routine record-keeping work including station logs, time reports, material usage, shift logs, etc.
  • Perform housekeeping duties in general plant areas as well as specifically assigned equipment/areas.
  • Inspects, maintains, replaces, repairs, aligns and participates in balancing activities as needed on rotating and reciprocating equipment.
  • Installs and maintains a variety of pipe and pipe fittings on high energy, steam, water or air systems and high pressure gas and oil systems.
  • Performs repair and maintenance on valves of various sizes and pressures except those requiring a “VR” Stamp. (may install, remove, replace “VR” Stamp valves)
  • Performs rigging and scaffolding activities. Complex and critical lifts.
  • Performs brazing, soldering, torch cutting and electric arc welding except work requiring an “R” Stamp.
  • Performs most machine shop tasks with a high degree of skill to fabricate and repair equipment components.
  • Utilizes equipment manuals or other materials for guidance in the performance of repairs, adjustments and installation of equipment.
  • Plans own work and the work of others as necessary.

Benefits

  • This position offers a base pay rate of $47.27 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.
