About The Position

The Power Plant Operating Engineer I position at Merck involves operating and monitoring various utilities distribution systems and auxiliary equipment to ensure adequate services across the site. The role requires adherence to safety and operational procedures while working under the supervision of the Watch Engineer. The engineer will be responsible for the operation of turbo-generators, steam boilers, and water conditioning equipment, as well as performing necessary tests and adjustments to maintain proper chemistry in the systems.

Requirements

  • New Jersey Blue Seal 3rd Class Engineer License (1-C) or higher.
  • Previous power plant operating experience.
  • Ability, fitness, and skill to perform the job duties.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and operate all outside utilities distribution systems and auxiliary equipment under the supervision of the Watch Engineer.
  • Monitor and operate turbo-generators and associated auxiliary equipment, including turbine room switchgear.
  • Operate water conditioning equipment such as reverse osmosis units, deionizers, and filters.
  • Test, treat, and adjust heater and boiler systems for proper chemistry.
  • Work with 900# and 135# steam boilers and their auxiliaries under supervision.
  • Exchange operating information with previous shifts and relay it to the incoming shift.
  • Train assigned personnel for qualifications or advancement to higher classifications.
