Axalta is seeking an Intern to join its Powder Coatings Research & Technology group. The Powder Technology group develops and supports powder coatings for the Architectural, ACE (Agricultural and Construction Equipment), Automotive, General Metals, Electric Battery and Energy markets. The intern is responsible for preparing, processing, and evaluating laboratory samples as per established procedures. The main area of work will be evaluation and development of an elemental laser analyzer as a trouble shooting method to identify defects in coatings. The intern takes functional direction from the Team Manager.

  • Comply with all requirements for laboratory quality and safety certification.
  • Weigh up and blend raw materials as per written formula with strong attention to material identification, weights and blending conditions.
  • Extrude, grind and sieve materials with attention to equipment settings.
  • Safely operate, move, disassemble, clean and reassemble equipment multiple times per day.
  • Prepare coated substrates and evaluate the coating appearance.
  • Maintain clear and update technical data and project records.
  • Exhibit excellent attention to detail to avoid errors and safety situations.
  • Work independently or as part of a team.
  • Be flexible on working hours to meet critical project deadlines.
  • Stand and walk uninterruptedly for up to 2 hours at a time.
  • Perform physical/standing type of activity for 80% of an 8 hour shift.
  • Traverse and transport material on equipment from one work area to another.
  • Move product weighing up to 25 lbs. from floor to waist on a daily basis.
  • Position self to move product from ground to waist and waist to chest height.
  • Possess proficient visual acuity and color discrimination.
  • Adhere to health and safety site rules and perform in a manner to eliminate risk of harm to self or others.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment at all times including safety glasses, dust mask, gloves, safety shoes, and hearing protection.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program - engineering disciplines are preferred.
  • Coatings experience with emphasis in powder coatings is a plus.
  • Experience in the industrial research environment is desirable.
  • Experience with lab instrumentation and test methods is a plus.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel).
