About The Position

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Postdoctoral Scholar position at the Center for Microgrid Research. The position will support the Center's research on reliability, security, and resilience of electric power systems and microgrids and stability analysis and Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) for microgrid applications. The successful candidate will be required to conduct independent research, develop new ideas and contribute to research proposals, engage with faculty, staff, and students, prepare manuscripts for publication, and present their work at conferences. The St. Thomas Center for Microgrid Research (CMR) is seeking candidates for postdoctoral scholar positions in the electric power systems controls, nonlinear dynamics, microgrids, and distribution systems. The scholars will have a unique opportunity to work simultaneously on a real-world industry-grade microgrid and state-of-the-art Hardware-in-the-loop HIL testbeds.

Requirements

  • Completed a PhD degree (U.S. or foreign equivalent), in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Proven expertise in microgrid modeling and controls in Matlab/Simulink or similar.
  • Demonstrated publication record.
  • Proven communication, time management, and teamwork skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with projects funded by the Department of Defense.
  • Familiarity with export control laws and restrictions on project personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative solutions and technical approaches to design, modeling, and implementation of advanced control systems in microgrid applications.
  • Create a digital twin of the current and planned microgrid and test control systems on the digital twin and real-world microgrid.
  • Serve as lead author on project reports, journal articles, conference papers, and presentations.
  • Develop experimental test plans to collect data to validate modeling and analysis work.
  • Leads and supports technical proposals for developing new projects.
  • Meet grant goals and deliverables by completing assigned research tasks and reports.
  • Supervise and lead student researchers (undergraduate and graduate).
  • Work closely with the Center's director and the CMR team.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Center by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
