Postdoctoral Research Scholar of Modern Palestine and Israel: Religion and Nationalism The Institute for the Transregional Study of the Contemporary Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia (TRI) at Princeton University invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) positions in the study of modern Palestine and Israel, starting September 2026. Successful candidates will pursue independent research and will teach one course per academic year (pending sufficient course enrollment and approval from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty). Successful candidates will also participate actively in-person in the intellectual community of TRI and the Department of Near Eastern Studies during both the fall and the spring academic terms and take part regularly in lectures, panels, and conferences sponsored by the TRI and Department of Near Eastern Studies. Qualifications Applications are welcome from candidates who have or expect to have a Ph.D. by September 1, 2026. Applicants should not have more than two years of post-PhD research experience by the start of appointment. TRI is especially interested in scholars whose research focuses on the relationship between religion and nationalism in Palestine and Israel. TRI will consider applicants from any discipline, though it is particularly interested in applicants trained in the disciplines of history, politics, religious studies, literature and culture, and international relations. Term of Appointment The term of the fellowship is one year, normally beginning September 1, 2026. For candidates who begin the fellowship with no more than one year of post-PhD research experience, there will be a possibility of renewal for up to one additional year subject to satisfactory performance, meeting all requirements, and continued funding. If a candidate begins the fellowship with two years of post-PhD research experience, the appointment will end after one year, without the possibility of renewal. Appointments will be made to the rank of Postdoctoral Research Associate. The work location for this position is in-person on campus at Princeton University. Selected postdoctoral research associates will be awarded a competitive salary along with standard benefits. Additionally, they will receive a research fund and supplementary support for conference travel and participation fees.
