About The Position

The Department of Marine and Coastal Environmental Science at Texas A&M University (Galveston Campus) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. The successful candidate will lead the development of ocean models, building upon existing modeling frameworks established by the group. The primary modeling tool will be SCHISM (Semi-implicit Cross-scale Hydroscience Integrated System Model), an open-sourced ocean modeling system that has been widely used in numerous ocean forecasting products. Responsibilities include expanding the capabilities of current ocean model applications, with emphasis on hydrodynamics, coastal flooding, biogeochemical simulations, and the dispersion of coastal pollutants and fish larvae. The postdoc will also conduct independent research, mentor undergraduate students, and contribute to external funding proposals.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Marine Science, Oceanography, or a related field
  • No prior experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with unstructured grid ocean modeling system.
  • Experience of using programming language Python to deal with large 3D ocean data.
  • Ocean modeling under Linux environment; Python programming; SCHISM
  • A solid understanding of key processes in coastal ocean, basic hydrology, sediment transport, and biogeochemical process.

Responsibilities

  • Developing ocean model and conducting fundamental research
  • Developing compound flooding model with coverage of coastal land, estuaries, and deep ocean.
  • Conducting fundamental research by integrating long-term observational data and high-resolution modeling to coastal ocean dynamics in response to acute storm events and future sea level rise.
  • Writing and publishing high-quality research articles.
  • Participating collaborative research initiatives and proposal writing
