About The Position

The Department of Politics at Princeton University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join their team. This position is designed for an individual who will collaborate closely with Professor Arthur Spirling on various research projects aimed at enhancing quantitative methodologies within the field of political science. The successful candidate will engage in a range of projects that may explore innovative methods for large language models, assess the societal impacts of artificial intelligence, and investigate broader applications of statistics and machine learning in social sciences. This role does not involve teaching responsibilities; however, the postdoc may be required to undertake some administrative tasks. These tasks could include assisting in the organization and planning of seminar series, conferences, or contributing to the administration of the broader "Polmeth" community. The position is structured to provide a supportive environment for research and development in quantitative political science methodologies, allowing the postdoctoral associate to contribute significantly to ongoing projects while also fostering their own research interests. Candidates for this position should possess a PhD in a relevant field, demonstrating a robust background in quantitative research, statistics, and econometrics. Strong computational skills are essential, particularly in programming with scripting and system languages. Experience with large language models, whether through local implementation or API usage, is highly desirable, as is familiarity with large relational databases. The ideal candidate will exhibit creativity, initiative, organizational skills, flexibility, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines effectively. The appointment is for one year, with the potential for extension based on satisfactory performance and continued funding. The work will be conducted in-person on the Princeton University campus, and applications will be reviewed starting January 15, 2025.
