About The Position

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct advanced research in Marine Science at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), focusing on the analysis of sediment cores from the Western Pacific. The position involves sampling, analyzing, dating, and interpreting sediment cores from coastal sinkholes to study paleotyphoon events. This full-time, twelve-month appointment provides an opportunity to contribute to high-impact marine research through laboratory and field investigations, data integration, and collaboration with faculty and interdisciplinary research teams.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in Marine Science, Research, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated [MR1] [DW2] experience (minimum 3 years) in sedimentology and stratigraphy.
  • Proficient in SonarWiz, Surfer, and Matlab/Python.
  • Delivers clear, concise, and accurate communication (verbal and written) in a timely manner, adapting to diverse audiences and providing constructive feedback.
  • Skilled in data entry, extraction, and analysis using various software applications; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant computer software; and capable of writing clear and concise reports and correspondence.
  • Handles sensitive information with discretion, maintains confidentiality, and works effectively and efficiently in a collaborative environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with marine science fieldwork or underwater sensing technologies.
  • Background in grant writing or contributing to funded research proposals.
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques applied to geospatial or sensor data.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct advanced analyses of sediment cores collected in the Federated States of Micronesia, including sampling, chronology development, and interpretation of depositional records.
  • Integrate datasets into centralized repositories to support research collaboration, visualization, and data sharing.
  • Prepare manuscripts, technical reports, and presentations for publication and dissemination to scientific audiences and funding sponsors.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of research strategies, methodologies, and dissemination plans.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervising faculty.
