About The Position

The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the PhD or other doctoral degree under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee. The Alabama Water Institute at University of Alabama seeks applications for a postdoctoral fellow position for a multi-year NOAA-funded project. This position will be embedded in the Alabama Water Institute in the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH). This position collaborates with the CIROH research team and coordinates with collaborators at the National Water Center to make advances to the hydrofabric of the Next Generation Water Resources Modeling Framework. Successful candidates will hold an advanced degree in a closely aligned discipline to the research needs and have a strong record of achievement in the noted research areas. Initial appointment will be for one year. Renewal will be contingent upon demonstrated research productivity and availability of funds up to a period of four years.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in computer science, geospatial technologies, civil engineering, applied hydrology, geoscience, or a closely related field.
  • Candidates will need to have completed their Ph.D. or have it completed by the start of employment.

  • Strong interest in (or be already skilled in) the development, application, and testing of hydrologic models.
  • Comfortable with working in the python programming language.
  • Knowledge and experience in at least three of the following: developing watershed model input datasets, geospatial analysis, applying large-scale hydrologic models, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer programming and open software development, high-performance computing, and research studies applying hydrologic models.

  • Familiar with the R programming language, geospatial python libraries like geopandas, and GIS software like QGIS.
