About The Position

The Applied Materials Division, Process R&D and Scale up Group at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral candidate to conduct general research in material science and electrochemistry related to next generation cathode material synthesis for lithium-ion and sodium batteries. The selected individual will work under supervision and will assist the Lead PI on developing experimental methods and techniques to synthesize these new materials. The candidate needs to be familiar with electrochemical testing and evaluating these materials.

Requirements

  • Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically completed within the last 0-5 years) in material science or related chemistry science with 0 to 1 year of post-graduate experience.
  • Knowledge in the areas of materials science, metallurgical and ceramic engineering including hands-on, practical laboratory experience with material synthesis and processing, and analytical methods.
  • Hands-on experience: XRD & Refinement, SEM-EDX, TGA-MS, DSC, BET, coin-cell preparation and testing.
  • Knowledge in electrochemical analysis techniques such as GC, CV, GITT and EIS.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and on a timely basis with the supervisory personnel on all developments or matters resulting from work activities.
  • Knowledgeable to provide novel solutions to electrochemical issues from multiple areas of materials research including TM-oxides, TM-phosphates, composite materials.
  • Skilled oral and writing communication skills with a good record of publication and external recognition in relevant areas.

  • This position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois, five days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and experience in the following areas are highly desirable: DoE, continuous/batch co-precipitation reactions (e.g., CSTR), solid state synthesis, ability to work with larger equipment or experience in kilo-scale synthesis, electrochemistry, and Li- and Na-ion battery chemistry.
