The Applied Materials Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a postdoctoral appointee in the Separations and Bioprocessing group. This position will have two focus areas. One is to support an effort to recycle graphite from Li-ion batteries to produce graphene and graphite for reuse in batteries or other applications. The other focus will be on valorizing waste products from coal production including coal fines to produce graphite precursor materials. This separation will likely include processes such as froth flotation, gravity separation and leaching.

  • Support recycling of graphite from Li-ion batteries.
  • Produce graphene and graphite for reuse in batteries or other applications.
  • Valorize waste products from coal production, including coal fines.
  • Conduct separation processes such as froth flotation, gravity separation, and leaching.
  • Run reactors such as CSTRs for various processes.
  • Exfoliate graphite into graphene using solution-based processes.
  • Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science (completed within the last 0-5 years).
  • Knowledge of Li-ion batteries, including fabrication of coin cells and performing electrochemical performance testing.
  • Experience in characterization of carbonaceous materials using techniques such as Raman, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.
  • Ability to run reactors such as CSTRs.
  • Skilled in installing, modifying, and maintaining equipment.
  • Strong communication skills at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Willingness to abide by safety rules and work with large volumes of hazardous chemicals.
  • Flexibility to change projects and work on a variety of projects simultaneously.
