About The Position

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility’s (ALCF) mission is to accelerate major scientific discoveries and engineering breakthroughs for humanity by designing and providing world-leading computing facilities in partnership with the computational science community. We help researchers solve some of the world’s largest and most complex problems with our unique combination of supercomputing resources and computational science expertise. The Leadership Computing Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Postbaccalaureate Appointee to support programs, services, and/or technical initiatives that advance the ALCF’s mission. This role is designed for recent bachelor's degree graduates interested in developing hands-on experience in high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI/ML) and/or data science. The specific scope of work may include: Responsibilities Contribute to the development, coordination, and/or evaluation of ALCF programs, services, and technical workflows. Support education, training, user engagement, or operational pipelines designed to build and sustain a highly skilled scientific computing workforce, while independently exploring new approaches or formats based on direction from a supervisor. Assist in building, maintaining, testing, and prototyping software, tools, or services that support HPC and/or AI-driven workflows. Develop and evaluate prototypes or pilot initiatives that explore future directions of the ALCF, working in collaboration with the ALCF Division Director and members of the ALCF staff, based on defined project goals and guidance. Participate in cross-functional initiatives that may include data management, system reliability, or emerging technology efforts. Deliver high-quality organizational, technical, and communication support to ensure smooth execution of programs, services, and exploratory initiatives. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, program staff, and leadership to advance project goals. Position Requirements Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required: Recently completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computational science, physical sciences, engineering, or a related field, with demonstrated ability to apply academic knowledge to open-ended, real-world problems. Experience programming in one or more languages such as Python, C, or C++, including independently developing, testing, and debugging code with minimal supervision. Proven ability to analyze problems, identify appropriate solution strategies, and execute tasks with limited direction in a research or technical environment. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks or deadlines, and follow through independently. Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively, contributing effectively to team-based projects while taking ownership of individual responsibilities. Strong written and/or oral communication skills, including the ability to clearly document work, explain technical concepts, and proactively communicate progress or issues. Demonstrated ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. Preferred Qualifications Experience with software build, testing, CI/CD workflows, or maintaining reliable software services. Familiarity with HPC, AI/ML, or data-intensive computing concepts. Requirements
