About The Position

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility’s (ALCF) mission is to accelerate major scientific discoveries and engineering breakthroughs for humanity by designing and providing world-leading computing facilities in partnership with the computational science community. We help researchers solve some of the world’s largest and most complex problems with our unique combination of supercomputing resources and computational science expertise. The Leadership Computing Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Postbaccalaureate Appointee to support the integration of Jupyter AI capabilities into the ALCF environment. This role is designed for recent bachelor’s degree graduates interested in developing hands-on experience at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), and open-source software development. The specific scope of work may include: Responsibilities: Explore and evaluate the current state of Jupyter AI development, including collaborative notebook editing, large language model (LLM) integration, and tool-calling capabilities such as MCP servers. Test and validate Jupyter AI components for compatibility with ALCF’s AI services and HPC environment, ensuring robust and efficient integration. Develop workflows and prototypes that combine Jupyter AI capabilities with ALCF’s AI services, enabling researchers to leverage advanced tools for scientific discovery. Collaborate with ALCF staff to identify and address challenges in deploying Jupyter AI components in an HPC environment. Document findings, workflows, and best practices to support the adoption of Jupyter AI tools by ALCF researchers. Advocate for Jupyter AI capabilities within the ALCF and broader research community, demonstrating their potential to enhance scientific productivity and collaboration. Position Requirements Recently completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computational science, data science, or a related field, with demonstrated ability to apply academic knowledge to real-world technical challenges. Strong programming skills, particularly in Python, with experience developing, testing, and debugging software. Familiarity with REST APIs and their use in integrating software components or services. Foundational knowledge of AI concepts and tools, including large language models (LLMs) and their applications. Experience using Jupyter notebooks and familiarity with the Jupyter software ecosystem. Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively, contributing effectively to team-based projects while taking ownership of individual responsibilities. Strong written and/or oral communication skills, including the ability to document workflows, explain technical concepts, and communicate progress or issues. Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, teamwork and integrity.
