About The Position

The Post-Op RN will perform the tasks of direct patient care of all patients presenting to the Recovery Room. The Post-Op RN works in close association with the physician for detection, diagnosis, and treatment of all patients.

Requirements

  • Must successfully pass background checks and drug screen.
  • Demonstrate ability to immediately recognize and institute treatment for the following emergency/life threatening situations: cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, airway obstruction, respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, vagal response, syncope, shock, toxic overdose of local anesthesia, hypertension, hypotension, and malignant hyperthermia.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and collaborate compatibly with all physicians.
  • Minimum requirements include graduation from an accredited school of nursing. ASN required, BSN/MSN preferred.
  • 2 years of experience working in the perioperative setting (pre-operative department, post anesthesia care unit, operating room, interventional radiology, etc.)
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) documentation.
  • Active and unencumbered RN license
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certified

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Interact professionally with patients and family.
  • Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance, as necessary.
  • May be asked to supervise all other personnel and performs as needed to keep surgical suite.
  • Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients for treatment.
  • Always shows competence when handling specimens.
  • Helps in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in case of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to surgeon and/or corrects at once.
  • Conducts medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients, co-workers, and self, per hospital policies and procedures.
  • Checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
  • Protects patient’s sensitivities and right to privacy; closely sees patient with minimal disturbance.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Finds and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Follows aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that perfects patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Supports and keeps a culture of safety and quality.
  • Respects the privacy of all persons and confidential information according to Critical thinking.
  • Ability to make decisions in crisis situations.
  • Transcribes and implements physician orders.
  • Provides education to patients and their family member(s).
  • Provides emotional support to patients and family member(s)/
  • Plans and implements Plan of Care for patients.
  • Passing medications, mixing IV’s, doing treatments, and assessing patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
