About The Position

Post Doctoral Scholar to work with Professor Scott Gaudi in the Department of Astronomy on the development and planning of several surveys enabled by NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey. The department has substantial institutional presence in the Roman Space Telescope, including significant participation in two Project Infrastructure Teams and two Wide Field Science Teams. Duties will include contributing to RGES-PIT science by developing new galactic models/dust models and hierarchical occurrence rates analysis pipelines; preparing papers for publication; developing and testing infrastructure for early Roman science data (i.e., for the first 30 days of the mission); and supporting RGES-PIT outreach tasks such as the Sagan Summer Workshop and the Roman Microlensing Data Challenge 2026. The Department of Astronomy, within the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks a Post Doctoral Scholar to join our team. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college and the academic heart of the university. The College hosts 81 majors. With 38 departments, 20+ world-class research centers, and more than 2,000 faculty and staff members, students have the unique opportunity to study with the best artists, scholars, and scientists in their field.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a closely related field such as Physics or Computational Science, required by time of hire.
  • Candidates should possess a strong background in statistical analysis and data-driven modeling applied to large astronomical datasets and time-domain surveys.
  • Expertise in programming languages such as Python, R and C++ for complex data processing and analysis is highly desired.
  • While experience in specific time-domain survey areas like microlensing, exoplanet transits, or solar-system science is beneficial, individuals with demonstrated expertise in the analysis of large-scale galactic surveys or simulated synthetic population are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • contributing to RGES-PIT science by developing new galactic models/dust models and hierarchical occurrence rates analysis pipelines
  • preparing papers for publication
  • developing and testing infrastructure for early Roman science data (i.e., for the first 30 days of the mission)
  • supporting RGES-PIT outreach tasks such as the Sagan Summer Workshop and the Roman Microlensing Data Challenge 2026

Benefits

  • Eligible Ohio State employees receive comprehensive benefits packages, including medical, dental and vision insurance, tuition assistance for employees and their dependents, and state or alternative retirement options with competitive employer contributions.
