About The Position

The Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in the Shelby lab at the University of Tennessee Knoxville focuses on biophysical research and single-molecule techniques related to immune receptor signaling in B and T cells. Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field.
  • A strong publication record including first-author peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence methods.
  • Self-motivated work ethic leading to productive work.
  • Independent critical thinking skills necessary to design experiments or analyses.
  • Background knowledge of scientific data analysis and statistical analyses.
  • Familiarity with data analysis and graphing software.
  • Ability to gain proficiency in scientific programming in MATLAB.
  • Good record-keeping, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain a detailed lab notebook and other lab inventories.
  • Awareness of and ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate well with colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Scientific problem-solving/troubleshooting skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with quantitative or single-molecule/super-resolution microscopy.
  • Experience with biophysical techniques for studying model and/or plasma membranes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the research and work done in the Shelby Lab, especially the setup and development of biological laboratory resources for microscopy experiments.
  • Design, perform, troubleshoot, and optimize experiments.
  • Direct an independent research project involving quantitative single-molecule imaging of immune receptors.
  • Review and present recent literature related to the project.
  • Interpret and present results to fellow lab members and the broader scientific community through conference presentations and publications.
  • Provide constructive and critical feedback on other lab members' projects.
  • Assist in training new undergraduate and graduate students in the lab.
  • Apply for independent funding where appropriate and contribute to lab grant applications.
  • Contribute to basic lab management.
