About The Position

The Geophysical Institute is a research-focused organization at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The university offers a competitive work environment with strong benefits, including retirement and health insurance, generous leave policies, and tuition waivers for UAF courses. The Geophysical Institute values collaboration, accountability, and the exchange of ideas. We foster a professional and respectful environment dedicated to serving Alaska through applied science. Career growth and professional development are supported and encouraged. We are searching for a Postdoctoral Fellow for one year (with potential to extend by one year based on performance and funding availability) to develop finite element stress change models that evaluate the impact of interseismic, coseismic and postseismic deformation following sequences of large earthquakes.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Geophysics, Geodesy, or a related science field at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated experience with earthquake stress modeling, earthquake cycle simulations, or finite element modeling (preferably COMSOL).
  • Strong computational/programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB).
  • Familiarity with geodetic datasets (InSAR, GNSS) and seismic data analysis.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Record of scientific publication.

Responsibilities

  • Develop finite element stress change models.
  • Evaluate the impact of interseismic, coseismic, and postseismic deformation following large earthquakes.
  • Analyze 3D stress change models using geodetic and seismic datasets.
  • Evaluate interactions between coseismic, postseismic, and interseismic deformation.
  • Incorporate realistic megathrust geometries, including splay faults and coupling variations.
  • Integrate models with field observations to assess earthquake hazard and rupture forecasting.
  • Present findings at conferences.
  • Lead publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate within a dynamic, multi-institutional research team.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary.
  • Retirement options.
  • Annual leave.
  • 12 paid holidays per year.
