About The Position

Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service. The primary duty is to conduct research projects in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry. A secondary duty is to co-supervise graduate students pursuing degrees in synthetic organic chemistry. The responsibilities include carrying out organic reactions aimed at achieving project goals on a regular and consistent basis, keeping the PI informed of project activities and progress, maintaining a complete and accessible laboratory notebook, participating in discussions relevant to the project, sharing laboratory resources responsibly with others working in the lab, assisting with the preparation of publications and presentations arising from the project, maintaining a clean and safe laboratory working environment. It is expected that the research associate will apply their background in organic chemistry and solid supported synthesis to new problems and developments in carbohydrate chemistry as the project demands.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in organic chemistry and experience with polymer-supported oligosaccharide synthesis are required.
  • The position requires the skills of designing and conducting multi-step organic syntheses, isolating and purifying the products of reactions using appropriate chromatographic separation methods, and determining the structure of the products using NMR spectral data.
  • The ability to work safely and responsibly in a synthetic organic chemistry lab, to use standard methods of running organic reactions, to prepare and track samples, to identify literature relevant to the project, and to prepare scientific publications are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with developing new methods for chemical glycosylation, solid phase organic synthesis, and/or laboratory automation technologies are preferred
