About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that stands among the world’s most renowned education institutions. With ground-breaking brain science, path-breaking performances, creative start-ups, big data, big ambitions, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn’t imagine the future, we invent it. If you’re passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here! The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at CMU is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative ways to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate. This position conducts a broad range of activities in the development and analysis of commercial systems for large-language models (LLMs), ensuring that the resulting designs are technically feasible, economically sustainable, and aligned with industry needs. The long-term impact of LLMs depends critically on viable commercial mechanisms that support healthy development for model providers and downstream users.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI/ML or Data Science
  • Research experience with economics and/or game theory
  • Publications in top machine learning and/or economic conferences and journals
  • Demonstrated strength in both theoretical analysis and practical programming
  • A combination of education and meaningful experience from which comparable knowledge is proven may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze LLM-based commercial models by collecting, simulating, and evaluating system data, providing insights on pricing, incentive alignment, resource allocation, and multi-stakeholder interactions.
  • Design commercial mechanisms and incentive models for LLM systems using principles from economics, game theory, and market design to ensure sustainable and fair development for providers and users.
  • Develop software components, simulation tools, or prototype systems that integrate LLM training and inference pipelines with economic or game-theoretic mechanisms in real-world scenarios.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional research teams and external partners to ensure technical feasibility, economic soundness, and engineering scalability of proposed LLM commercial systems.
  • Coordinates work consistently to achieve maximum productivity.

Benefits

  • comprehensive medical, prescription, dental, and vision insurance
  • generous retirement savings program with employer contributions
  • tuition benefits
  • ample paid time off and observed holidays
