The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is the nation's first engineering department in a school of public health founded in 1921. It is unique as an environmental science and engineering program housed in a school of public health. The mission of ESE is to promote human and ecological health for all by identifying, understanding, and solving pressing environmental challenges. Students and faculty work collaboratively to: (1) understand the environmental transport and transformation of chemicals and infectious agents; (2) protect vulnerable populations from toxic exposures; (3) mitigate the impacts of climate change on air, water and health; and (4) create a healthy, sustainable and equitable future. The faculty and students of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) are responding to, planning for, and working to mitigate new and evolving public health threats. Some of these threats include viruses and toxic compounds in the air we breathe, hazardous agents in contaminated floodwaters, antibiotic resistance, air pollution exposures from drought-enabled wildfires, changes in water availability in low-income countries, extreme weather-impacts on the financial health of local water districts and prenatal exposures to legacy and emerging contaminants. We have an internationally recognized faculty in air pollution, environmental health sciences, climate change and health, global water policy, infectious disease and microbiology, environmental chemistry, transport, and engineering. We are home to UNC's Water Institute and the Institute for Environmental Health Solutions. We are seeking a candidate with doctoral training in an environmental health-related discipline such as exposure assessment, molecular or computational toxicology and biology, environmental chemistry, statistics, bioinformatics, geography, or epidemiology for an NIEHS funded T32 postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Science and Engineering. The initial appointment period is 1 year with a maximum of 2 years of support. This fellowship is part of a robust training program, encompassing epidemiology, biostatistics and environmental sciences and affords the fellow the opportunity to pursue mentored research in their areas of interest. Fellows are encouraged to collaborate with UNC Investigators as well as adjunct training faculty at the NIEHS and EPA. This training program will prepare environmental health scientists to be future leaders in environmental health science collaborations.
