About The Position

The Medical Interpreter - Per Diem is responsible for medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters. This role acts as a liaison between patients and staff, informing clinicians about cultural considerations when treating Portuguese speaking patients. The interpreter will also work with ancillary departments, translating patient information materials, consent forms, and editing translated materials. Additionally, the position involves identifying areas where the hospital can better meet the needs of Portuguese speaking communities, explaining the interpreter model to clinicians and patients, assisting with training staff interpreters, and orienting patients to the hospital as needed. Other duties include coordinating and scheduling freelance interpreters, assisting with data entry and collection, completing interpreter paperwork, and supporting patients outside of their clinical appointments with issues relating to their care at the hospital. The role contributes towards developing an environment that is welcoming and responsive to Portuguese speaking patients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree or experience.
  • Excellent rating on Interpreter Assessment Evaluation.
  • Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills.
  • Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory.
  • Basic anatomy and physiology vocabulary in English and Portuguese.
  • Experience working as an interpreter in a clinical environment.
  • Ability to work well as a team with clinicians and patients.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters.
