About The Position

Working for 43North is an experience like no other! Each year, we invest $5 million in companies that relocate to Buffalo through our startup competition. Are you a creative thinker, with a knack for the written word, project management skills, and an in-depth understanding of social media trends? Can you efficiently complete tasks in a fast-paced working environment? Are you curious about Buffalo’s startup ecosystem and passionate about the Queen City? If so, you might be the right person to join 43North’s investments & portfolio team as a Portfolio Intern! The Portfolio & Selection intern will play a key role in supporting 43North’s application process leading up to our annual startup competition. This individual will have a hand in recruiting applicants, assist companies with questions during the application process, and screening applicants for quality and fit. In addition to our selection process, this person will assist the team with programming for the current portfolio. A collaborative spirit and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and pitch in will be required.

Requirements

  • Live and work locally in Buffalo, NY.
  • This position is NOT remote.
  • In-person availability May 2026 - August 2026 (with the option to stay on through October)
  • Availability for 40 hours/week
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Entrepreneurship, or a related field (preferred but not required)
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, creative, and analytical skills
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced work environment
  • An understanding of the city of Buffalo’s cultural and entertainment assets and knowledge of Western New York’s entrepreneurial landscape
  • The ability to learn and use AI tools & software (such as Harmonic, Airtable, Standard Metrics, Pitchbook, etc.)
  • Team-oriented mindset with a positive attitude, collaborative spirit, and willingness to pitch in as needed
  • Passion for tech, startups, Buffalo, and economic development

Nice To Haves

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Entrepreneurship, or a related field (preferred but not required)

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with targeting “top-of-the-funnel” applicant universe
  • Helping to devise an outbound marketing campaign to target potential applicants, including email drip campaigns, phone calls, and meetings
  • Leading our customer success efforts by triaging and managing inbound inquiries from applicants
  • Researching potential target applicants and venture capital funds
  • Assisting with 43North’s judging process, analyzing incoming applications, setting up Zoom calls, and preparing data and diligence for judges
  • Accurately relaying information about 43North and the program to potential applicants
  • Attending monthly meetings with founders in portfolio
