Position Summary: The Portfolio Management Manager will lead, train, and develop a team of Portfolio Managers (PM) and Team Assistants (TA) across the bank’s Real Estate and Commercial Loan portfolios, ensuring efficient processes, accurate data management, consistent credit quality, timely routine administration, and recognition of cross-sell opportunities. This role requires a highly experienced professional with a strong background in portfolio management, policy development, and credit, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills. In addition to directly supervising the PM/TA team, this position will lead role clarity and skill development, establishing strong day-to-day collaboration with Credit Analysts, the Credit Analyst Manager, Credit Administration, and the CRE, Commercial, and Business Banking Directors. The salary for this role will be between $111,449 and $167,172. The specific salary offered will depend on several factors including but not limited to applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience. Requirements

  • Track record of successfully managing and growing large loan portfolios.
  • 3 years of leadership, management, and supervisory experience in a similar portfolio management role, preferred but not required.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial analysis, loan structuring, budgeting, customer annual reviews, presentation skills and portfolio profitability.
  • Experience with portfolio optimization, budgeting, and financial analysis.
  • Ability to assist with CCAR reports and contribute to Problem Loan Committee discussions.
  • Proficiency in conducting relationship reviews, understanding cash flow cycles, and leading discovery conversations to match client needs with bank products and services.
  • Strong business acumen, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally (written and verbal) across Portfolio Management, Credit, and business line stakeholders, for example: active listening and clarifying questions; translating credit feedback into actionable guidance for PMs; influencing without authority to align on priorities; and de-escalating issues to reach timely decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and credibility across teams (PM/CA/Relationship teams) by setting clear expectations, following through on commitments, and delivering candid feedback in a constructive, coaching-oriented manner.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership across departments and manage expectations effectively.
  • High level of organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities under complex demands.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop teams, ensuring continuous growth and professional development.

  • Bachelor’s degree (Finance preferred) or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5 or more years of Commercial Banking Experience (C&I and Commercial Real Estate).

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Directly manage a team of Portfolio Managers and Team Assistants.
  • Prioritize and oversee weekly workflow for PMs and TAs, ensuring all tasks are completed timely and accurately.
  • Develop and implement measurable performance metrics for routine portfolio administration.
  • Foster strong collaboration between Portfolio Managers, Credit Analysts, the Credit Analyst Manager, and Directors through regular pipeline/review huddles, clear handoffs, and shared expectations for turnaround time and credit quality.
  • Process Management: Establish and streamline processes for new business within the weekly workflow.
  • Coordinate weekly with LOB Leaders, Credit Analysts, and the Credit Analyst Manager to align priorities and capacity across CA, PM, and TA teams; remove bottlenecks, confirm deal/renewal sequencing, and ensure consistent underwriting and review standards.
  • System and Vendor Management: Become a go-to resource for support, training, and expansion of the Abrigo loan origination system.
  • Other systems management as necessary.
  • Portfolio Oversight: Oversee accuracy of Credit Memos, Business Loan Agreements (BLAs), and required entries in the internal Tickler Tracking System.
  • Ensure timely collection of financial information and completion of Annual Loan Reviews (ALRs) per the BLA and Tickler Tracking System.
  • Monitor and manage past-due payments, current taxes, identify risk changes, and concur or recommend appropriate risk rating changes.
  • Support Portfolio Managers in managing existing portfolios, facilitating customer Annual Reviews with PM and Partners, including CRM if requested. The primary objective is to lead a team of Portfolio Managers and Team Assistants at a level enabling the CRMs to spend 75%+ of their time with new business development.
  • Team Development: Build and execute structured development plans for PMs and TAs (onboarding, technical skill progression, and career pathways) to strengthen bench strength and develop the next generation of Commercial Relationship Managers (CRMs).
  • Coach and train PMs and TAs in underwriting, loan structuring, credit writing, and credit presentations in partnership with Credit Analysts and the Credit Analyst Manager (e.g., calibration sessions, shared templates, and quality reviews).
  • Establish a recurring training cadence (job aids, portfolio case studies, shadowing, and joint PM/CA sessions) that improves consistency, elevates risk identification, and reinforces policy and documentation standards.
  • Reporting Provide a weekly update to the team on Reg B, ticklers, past-due items, ALRs due, pipeline, and maturing loans.
  • Provide other Abrigo efficiency reporting as requested.
  • Provide a monthly recap for Board Reporting.
  • Other reports as determined by CLO or COO.
