About The Position

GENERAL FUNCTIONS Performs the maintenance, repair and improvements to the Port & Harbor facilities. JOB FUNCTIONS/MAJOR ACTIVITIES Performs preventative maintenance and repairs to all Port and Harbor related equipment, vehicles, vessels and infrastructure. Fabrication of items for Port and Harbor maintenance activities. Installs structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing improvements as directed. Assists or performs collection/disposal of solid waste and used oil for the Port and Harbor. Maintains all floats, ramps, and dock structures, replacing damaged portions of wood and metal components. Performs snow removal throughout the Port & Harbor facilities, maintaining accessibility to parking lots, docks, and approaches. Occasionally operates heavy equipment in the performance of routine job functions. Performs other duties as directed by the Port Maintenance Supervisor or designee. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Minimum three years' experience with hand and power tools required. Working knowledge of: hydraulic systems (motors, cylinders valves, etc.), electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, metal fabrication (welding, cutting, brazing, etc.), small/large engine repair. Must have basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry experience and be capable of performing heavy manual labor. High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Basic knowledge of heavy equipment operation desirable. DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES Frequently works without supervision or assistance. Responsible for proper care of tools and equipment. Requires ability to exercise independent judgment in the performance of maintenance tasks and assigned duties. Activities are a major source of potential liability to the City. Carries out procedures at a division level. Minor budget authority at division level. SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY None. EXTERNAL VISIBILITY/CONTACT Moderate contact with the general public and key service personnel. Low frequency of contact with government officials. Infrequent contact with key city personnel and attendance at public meetings. WORKING CONDITIONS High frequency of exposure to inclement weather and hazardous working conditions. Frequently involved in heavy physical exertion lifting up to 50 pounds or moving equipment and in working in confined or awkward positions while using tools and equipment. May be required to work weekends, overtime and various shifts and to be on-call. Port Maintenance Tech I Minimum three years' experience with hand and power tools required. Basic knowledge of heavy equipment operation desirable. Port Maintenance Tech II Minimum five years' experience with hand and power tools required. Extensive experience in at least two of the following areas, and working knowledge of the others: hydraulic systems (motors, cylinders valves, etc.), electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, metal fabrication (welding, cutting, brazing, etc.), small/large engine repair. Must have advanced electrical, plumbing, carpentry experience and capable of performing heavy manual labor. Experience in heavy equipment operation required. Must hold certifications in at least two of the following areas: welding, electrical, hydraulics, refrigeration/ HVAC, boilers, or equipment operation. First Aide/CPR and Hazpower certification required. High school diploma or G.E.D. required, with college courses or certifications appropriate to the position.
