About The Position

The Port Checker I position at Tropical Shipping is a full-time role focused on providing essential support in the loading and discharging of vessels. This position is critical in ensuring that operations run smoothly and safely at the port. The individual in this role will work closely with the Port Equipment Operator Lead, providing precise and clear directional signals to facilitate the safe and efficient operation of cranes and other equipment. The job requires a keen attention to detail and the ability to communicate effectively with both the crane operators and vessel personnel to ensure that containers are placed correctly on the ship according to the stowage plan. In addition to signaling and coordinating with the Port Equipment Operator Lead, the Port Checker I will be responsible for inspecting containers for damage and cleanliness, directing the Port Equipment Operator II on where to stage containers, and assisting in the rigging of special lifts both ashore and aboard vessels. The role also involves operating a 10-ton forklift to move containers and cargo, maintaining certification and proficiency in forklift operation, and performing shipside support tasks such as handling lines and setting gangways. The Port Checker I will assist with routine maintenance inspections and work alongside Heavy Equipment Mechanics to ensure that crane maintenance is performed as needed. Safety is a paramount concern in this role, and the Port Checker I will be expected to monitor work areas on-board vessels to ensure personal safety and compliance with safety protocols. The position also requires physical stamina and the ability to perform manual tasks, including lifting and moving heavy objects, as well as enduring exposure to various weather conditions. The Port Checker I will prepare daily support equipment check sheets and submit them weekly, cross-train on crane team applications using handheld computers, and assist with general cleanliness and maintenance of the port area. This role is essential for maintaining operational efficiency and safety at the port, and the individual will be expected to perform all other duties as assigned.
